What is Charvak?

It is an ancient, heterodox Indian school of materialism, named after a sage, that emphasized sensory experience as the only reality.

Charvak is considered the symbolic founder or representative thinker of Lokayata, the oldest known materialist school of Indian philosophy.

This philosophy rejects anything that cannot be directly experienced through the five senses—meaning no belief in the soul, afterlife, karma, rebirth, or unseen forces.

Unlike traditions that relied on unseen forces, Charvak emphasized that the body and senses are the primary sources of knowledge.

This resonates with Ayurveda, which teaches that the body’s signals, natural rhythms, and lived experiences guide true understanding.

Charvak taught that life should be lived with joy, balance, and practical wisdom, because our well-being exists in the here and now.

His philosophy inspires a grounded lifestyle enjoying life, caring for the body, and avoiding unnecessary suffering.
